The Spark that Fell on the Commercial Quarters of Istanbul: Keresteciler Fire (September 9, 1927)

Summary/Abstract: Istanbul was a city that held a place in social/historical memory with fire disasters dating back to the Ottoman period. In the Republican era, despite the modernization of the fire department and the increased precautions taken, fires continued to haunt the city. One of these disastrous fires was the Keresteciler (Lumbermen) Fire of 9 September 1927. Unlike its predecessors, this fire did not occur in a residential area but in an important commercial center of Istanbul. The Keresteciler fire is notable not only for its impact on the economic life of the city but also for bringing issues such as the fire department, water problems, insurance, and urban planning back onto the agenda. This study reveals the details of the fire that occurred in one of the busiest commercial centers of İstanbul, Keresteciler Bazaar in 1927 based on the news appeared in the daily newspapers Cumhuriyet, Milliyet, Akşam and Son Saat.
