Summary/Abstract: This text focuses on the life and work of Todor Markov – a Bulgarian military figure, Major General, who in the period between the two world wars became a significant figure in the development of Bulgarian-Turkish diplomatic relations. Born in Hisarya (1870), he received a brilliant military education in Sofia and St. Petersburg. He occupied and devotedly performed various military intelligence and diplomatic positions in Thessaloniki, Constantinople and Edirne, which gave him the opportunity to closely follow the socio-political upheavals in the Ottoman Empire, which was experiencing its last years. In the early 1920s, the military attaché in Constantinople Todor Markov became a direct witness to the preparation and laying of the foundations of the Turkish Republic. His personal acquaintance with Mustafa Kemal Pasha, Ismet Pasha, Kızam Karabekir Pasha, etc. gave him the opportunity to meet with these prominent figures of the future republic and to discuss with them various aspects of Bulgarian-Turkish political and diplomatic relations. His precisely prepared reports and reports to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Confessions in Sofia today constitute a solid foundation for the study of Bulgarian-Turkish state relations in the complex international situation after the First World War. In the 1930s, Todor Markov published articles in periodicals, gave speeches in military clubs in Plovdiv and Sofia, through which he not only contributed to the correct interpretation of the processes and trends taking place in the bowels of the young Turkish Republic, but also stood out as a sincere advocate for Bulgarian-Turkish understanding and rapprochement in the Balkan context.
