Summary/Abstract: This article outlines several key moments of the initial introduction of pragmatism in Bulgaria. The analysis starts with the first work of James translated into Bulgarian (1902) and the early articles on Dewey (1903, 1904, 1905). It continues with the cryptic book Labor School (1910), Minev's emotional article (1910), Iliev's texts on pragmatism (1928, 1935), Torbov's critique of utility as a criterion of truth (1929), and Zlatarov's warning to separate the tares from the pure grain (1930). The monograph by Sarailiev, Pragmatism (1938), is regarded as a significant development that marked the subsequent reception of pragmatism in Bulgaria. Mihalchev's critical study (1939) is noted as inspired by Sarailiev's work. In the course of the analysis, it becomes clear that attitudes towards pragmatism in the period under review are ambiguous. From the very beginning pragmatism in Bulgaria has its apologists and its critics, and the truth of the matter lies somewhere between the superlative praise and the disparaging criticism.
