Summary/Abstract: This paper is devoted to Josiah Royce’s thought, which is an important, albeit less known in Bulgaria, part of classical American pragmatism. Although Royce’s philosophy is politically engaged, the present study does not attempt to reconstruct a possible political philosophy of Royce’s absolute pragmatism, but seeks to bring out Royce’s public philosophy in order to facilitate a dialogue between the different lines (epistemological, sociological, social-critical, semiotic) in the reception of pragmatist philosophy in Bulgaria. Royce’s social philosophy is built on three main pillars: (1) the ethical doctrine of loyalty; (2) enlightened provincialism; and (3) the idea of mutual international insurance. The concluding section provides a commentary on some of the political characteristics of Royce’s thought while also marking some of its shortcomings.
