Summary/Abstract: The goal of this paper is to present synthetically the history of the research on District IV of the Union of Poles in Germany as well as to outline the web of useful notions, academic approaches and potential fields of activities concerned with this phenomenon. The author notes that District IV has a substantial memory and academic literature, especially Wojciech Wrzesiński’s publication. However, it lacks a full monography, which should constitute the aim of new research. Since even the authors active in the period of the Polish People’s Republic noticed the impact of historical policy on such papers, one of the preliminary research postulates should concern outlining these publications’ reliance on memory. District IV’s future monograph ought to be based on up-to-date, interdisciplinary methodology that would root this organisation within the frames of the 20th-century Polish-German relations. The author notes that the monograph should take into account not only new Polish source materials (including those from the archives of the Institute of National Remembrance), but above all German sources which so far have been used in a limited scope. It concerns the Berlin files of Nazi Germany and Prussian administration as wells as the documents of the lower administration of the Ruhr Area (the migratory destination of Masurians).
