Summary/Abstract: Philippe Raynaud is a central figure in French intellectual life in the fields of political science and law. A convinced liberal, he has published both essays on contemporary French politics (The Plural Far Left, Paris, Autrement, 2006; or Emmanuel Macron: A Well-Tempered Revolution, Paris, Desclée De Brouwer, 2018) and more foundational works, co-editing with Stéphane Rials the Dictionary of Political Philosophy (PUF, 2003), offering a comparison of the three great liberal revolutions (Three Revolutions of Liberty: England, America, France, Paris, PUF, 2009), and explaining the institutions of the French Fifth Republic (The Judge and the Philosopher: Essays on the New Age of Law, Paris, Armand Colin, 2008; The Spirit of the Fifth Republic: History, Regime, System, Paris, Perrin, 2017). He has also reflected on the politico-social evolution of ideas (Secularism: History of a French Singularity, Paris, Gallimard, 2019; The Politeness of the Enlightenment: Laws, Customs, Manners, Paris, Gallimard, 2013). A constant in his work has been a return to the great political authors, having written prefaces for editions of political texts by Kant, Constant, Tocqueville, Kelsen… Through his presentation of Victor Hugo’s political thought, he reconnects with the spirit of his doctoral thesis, Max Weber and the Dilemmas of Modern Reason (Paris, PUF, 1987).
