Summary/Abstract: The objective of this sholarly research traces the sonata genre concepts in Pierre Boulez's Third Piano Sonata. The problem is approached through abstraction of Classical era sonata foundations to the level of their engendering logical mechanisms which renders them applicable in different stylistic conditions. The object is then analysed in regards of it's open alea-form and serial musical material – both offering a framework for renewed coherence of sonata process and structure. This article presents the methodology and initial stages of the study and discloses applicable to those transposed sonata foundations analogies inherent within the piece.
