Summary/Abstract: In the conditions of the long-term demographic crisis present in Croatia, the main characteristics of which are depopulation and population ageing, there is a decrease in the number of household members and an increase in their life expectancy. These processes are universal in the Croatian context, but the question arises as to whether transport accessibility in relation to regional centres has an impact on the number and age of household members. Karlovac County was chosen for the spatial scope of the research on this issue because it is relatively close to Zagreb (the largest city and capital of Croatia), and the county’s centre, Karlovac, is a significant centre in the regional context. Karlovac County also encompasses a peripheral rural area, so there are pronounced differences in transport accessibility in relation to the county centre of Karlovac. The observed county recorded significant depopulation and population ageing during the research period. In addition to this, the total number of households decreased, as has the average number of their members. In line with that, there has been an increase in the share of single-person households. Although the demographic situation in the entire county is very unfavourable, it is noticeable that rural areas that are isolated transport-wise have less favourable indicators than the urban and urbanised parts of the county.
