Summary/Abstract: The article traces the specific features of the translation and critical reception of the six novels by contemporary Romanian writer Gabriela Adameșteanu that have been published in Bulgarian. It highlights the role of her main translator, Roumiana L. Stantcheva, as well as the impact on this reception of the similar realities in the two countries (a shared historical experience and identical socio-political processes in the years before and during the communist regimes, as well as in the post-1989 transition) and the similarities in the behaviour and mentality of the two nations. The fact that Adameșteanu’s novels have become a subject of study within comparative Balkan literary scholarship in Bulgaria also provides an opportunity for their deeper understanding.
