Summary/Abstract: The application of a cognitive approach to understanding the definition of the sentence necessitates a natural revision of the classificatory paradigm of the simple sentence on the basis of its defining features. The prototypical predication of the self and the noun in the position of a predicate noun, within a interrogative-answer unity, serves as an illustrative miniature of the grammar of predication. Refining the distinction between syntactic and logical categories, and comparing them with respect to predicativity and modality, situates the classification of sentence invariants within the logic of the philosophy of language and within the perspective of the communicative act. The study proposes revised classificatory features and eliminates contradictions, the conflation of characteristics, and formal “fads” for morphological classes.
