Summary/Abstract: The essay deals with a large multilingual Orthodox monastic community in the Danubian Principalities in the second half of the 18th century. Taking a closer look at the language situation in these lands, this article focuses specifically on the remarkable polyglossia of the Paisian brotherhood that is rooted in the biography as well as in the religious conviction of its founder: Paisiy Velichkovsky (1722–1794). In contrast to the common practice in their environment, which aimed at suppressing multilingualism in favour of one language, and the general trend of the period towards an emerging national consciousness, Paisiy followed a path of consciously practiced multilingualism. This practiced was fixed in Paisiy’s monastic rule for the monastery of Dragomirna.
