Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses Robert Adam’s description of Diocletian’s Palace in Split, which was based on his study of this monument during his 1757 Grand Tour and published in London in 1764. In light of our current knowledge of the Palace, the analysis of his work will allow us to delve deeper into eighteenth-century architects’ understanding of ancient Roman architecture. Adam’s compelling reconstruction has guided the dialogue with Diocletian’s Palace throughout the evolution of architectural theory until the present day, even though later studies disproved a whole range of his presuppositions about its original function and form.
