Contemporary Practices of Religious Trips: Between Pilgrimage and Tourism

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the development of different types of pilgrimage, which have appeared after 1989 in Bulgaria. Using original empirical data generated through her fieldwork the author focuses on the canonical understanding of Orthodoxy and the effects of the interweaving of this understanding with esoteric beliefs, para-ecclesiastical practices and tourist services.
