Summary/Abstract: After its annexation by the Habsburg Monarchy in 1775, the demographic composition of the small territory of Bukovina, formerly part of Moldavia, changed rapidly due to the immigration of Ruthenians and Germans. This article tries to illustrate the language situation of the territory on the basis of the early public school system in the late 18th century. Within about twenty years German was established as the main language of culture and thus became an important means of upward social mobility, whereas the position of the Romanian language became significantly weakened after the Bukovina’s incorporation into the province of Galicia. Nevertheless, due to personal connections to Transylvania, a bilingual administrative elite started to emerge and would ultimately pave the way to regional autonomy after 1848.
