Summary/Abstract: Excluding the confusing 1978 Čelarevo measurement, the use of radiocarbon dating in the study of the Avar age has a 25-year history, since the determination of Avar age samples started in 1997–98. This research history paper describes the works published up to 2023 that present, analyse and interpret the radiocarbon dates of the Avar period. It shows the slow and far from straightforward process of evolution of research in the Avar age, which was long suspicious and distrustful of the method, from individual calibration of contingent and individual measurement data to modelling of measurement series compiled according to specific criteria using prior knowledge.
