Summary/Abstract: After the stabilisation of the borders between the Habsburg Monarchy and Ottoman Empire, the export of the Monarchy’s products to the Mediterranean gained the outmost importance in the economic plans of the Court of Vienna. In this paper the plans and ideas on improving the trading route by the rivers Sava and Kupa in Croatian lands are analysed, as well as the most prominent difficulties faced by the initiators of these innovations. The models for achieving an effective compromise between state institutions, engaged engineers, local estates and privileged companies are emphasized, as well as their effects. The research takes into account the sources kept in Hungarian, Austrian and Croatian state archives, as well as various published and unpublished individual initiatives, travel reports and statistics.
