Summary/Abstract: In recent years, intensification of archaeological research in Southeast Asia, along with new analytical methods resulted in an increasing number of Roman or Roman believed artefacts. These finds are often regarded as luxurious and exotic trade products, and are used to reconstruct mercantile activities between the Roman Empire and regions beyond India. This is particularly the case with Roman coins found in different regions of mainland and island Southeast Asia. Notwithstanding that most of these objects are lacking good contexts and many arrived in post-Roman times as antiquities. At the same time, locally made pendants evoking Roman coin designs, referred to as coin adaptations, have been discovered in a surprising number. Their types, dates and possible roles in local communities have not been fully examined yet. This paper aims to give a critical overview of Roman coins and coin adaptations discovered in Southeast Asia, in Thailand and Vietnam in particular. It provides their grouping by date, type and function, and adds possible interpretations regarding their popularity in local cultures.
