Summary/Abstract: This toponymic study aims to highlight, on the one hand, the different linguistic values of odonyms (street names) and, on the other hand, the motivation of street names from a broad social, historical, and economic perspective. Starting from the postulate that language is first and foremost a social institution, closely following the manifestations and developments of the community, having an eminently pragmatic role of communication and social cohesion, our toponymic study aims to examine the onomastic avatars of a street in the city of Galati that has had a particular historical destiny, a destiny reflected in the process of naming it - J.Boyle Street, currently an "extension" of Portului Street from the intersection with Navelor Street the former headquarters of the Fish Research Institute. Another concern of our diachronic study is the symbolic value of these odonyms in the context of the creation of a coherent urban ethos, in full connection with socio-historical realities, and of a specific spiritual identity.
