Summary/Abstract: The author first, through his personal literary biography, demonstrates the functioning and structure of publishing houses, literary public, literary criticism, and literary prizes in contemporary Serbia. Following this the author shows the genesis of today's pathological condition in contemporary literature and literary life. The main cause of this condition is the creation a 'literary mafia', namely a monopoly whose nucleus consists of Montenegrin and Serbian persons derived from the 'negative selection' during the rule of communism. Those people are managing Serbian literature today, also through literary associations, the most influential literary magazines, literary prizes etc. The author pledges for reform in Serbian literature, namely for re-evaluation of literature that emerged after the coming of Communists to power and for returning the dignity and literature to the writers.
