Summary/Abstract: The study deals with the issue of elections in old Hungary before 1918 and their reflection inlocal literature. Hungarian and Slovak literature of the time paid great attention to this issue, aselections played an important role in the life of the country. Thanks to the large number of smallnobility (gentry) in Hungary, quite a few people had direct electoral experience even before theliberal revolution in 1848. After 1865, elections were repeated cyclically, so they became partof everyday life. Elections were often accompanied by corruption and various forms of politicalmanipulation, which became a popular topic for literature. The writer Kálmán Mikszáthbecame the main chronicler of Hungarian parliamentarism, but Slovak realistic authors oftendealt with this issue as well. Although many of them took part in the elections, most of themremained standing before the gates of the parliament. Also interesting was the question of whythe Slovak parts of the old Hungarian Kingdom became the main base of the ruling LiberalParty for decades and why the candidates representing the Slovak national program were ableto reach only a tenth of voters.
