Summary/Abstract: The following study explores Vladimir Zarev’s novel And I Descended both as a postmodern literary event and in relation to the traditions of canonical and non-canonical gospel writing. The autobiographical portrayal of Jesus offers an unconventional yet linguistically coherent solution to the intricate synoptic problem that has challenged biblical scholars for centuries. The decline of classical approaches to the matter in the mid-twentieth century coincides with the birth of postmodernism in Europe, paving the way for performative experiments with the gospel metanarrative. In the Bulgarian literary context, And I Descended constitutes one such experiment: a first-person account by Jesus Himself, which enters into dialogue with apocryphal traditions and the synoptic gospels alike through central topics embodied in figures such as the sexuality of the Savior, Pontius Pilate, Judas, and others.
