Summary/Abstract: By the end of the 1680s , change of fortune in the Great Turkish War resulted in large number of Serbs leaving the Ottoman Empire and seeking refuge in the adjacent Habsburg Monarchy. Hoping that the Christian Imperial army would liberate them from Turkish yoke, they previously provided it with their support and were thus justifiably afraid of Turkish reprisals. The Great Migration of the Serbs of 1690 (as it later became known), led by their spiritual leader and head of the Patriarchat of Peć Arsenije III Čarnojević (1633–1706), eventually proved to be a turning point in political, as well as in cultural life of Serbian people. Once the Serbs settled in their new environment, they had to adapt to living in the new western European and modern absolutist state of that time.
