Summary/Abstract: Balancing Work and Childcare: Institutional, Political, and Cultural Determinants of Gender Inequality in Czechia. This article investigates the intricate relationship between work and family life in the Czech Republic, highlighting how structural and cultural barriers within the labour market impact gender equality, particularly in balancing work and caregiving responsibilities. With high female employment rates and limited access to childcare facilities for preschool children, the Czech Republic presents a compelling case for examining the interplay of historical, cultural, and institutional factors in a post-communist context. Employing Nancy Fraser’s three-dimensional framework of justice – redistribution, recognition, and representation – this study utilizes a critical analytical approach, integrating secondary data from various sources with a robust theoretical lens. The analysis explores how economic disparities, cultural norms, and political underrepresentation collectively reinforce gender inequalities, disproportionately affecting mothers compared to fathers. The findings reveal significant gaps in existing policies, perpetuated by entrenched societal stereotypes and insufficient institutional support. These results contribute to theoretical debates on work-life balance and gender equity, while offering actionable recommendations for policymakers. By focusing on the unique challenges faced in the Czech Republic, this article not only addresses a critical research gap but also provides practical insights for designing equitable social and labour policies in similar post-communist societies.
