Summary/Abstract: Background/purpose. Higher education sustainability is one of the primary influences on researchers, teachers, and policymakers due to its impact on environmental governance, institutional management, and student participation. The objective of this research is to understand the development processes of sustainability initiatives, including challenges, opportunities, and research gaps related to the implementation of sustainable initiatives in the educational, policy, and administrative aspects of colleges and universities. Materials/methods. The research investigates green campus projects, interdisciplinary sustainable development curricula, and carbon footprint mitigation initiatives at various institutions. It also examines adoption challenges, including financial, political, administrative, and institutional disparities. This literature review, in this case, provides evidence on various frameworks that can assist in undertaking sustainability through emphatically multidisciplinary, student participatory, and evidence-based approaches. Results. The constructs and reported insights suggest that sustainability in higher education can be achieved and maintained through a combination of policy changes, stakeholder involvement, and new pedagogy approaches. This report contributes to the existing literature on sustaining higher education institutions by providing examples of recommended practices, suggestions, policies, and expected actions for further study. Conclusion. Higher education can make significant contributions toward global sustainability concerns by cultivating pro-environmental behaviors, enhancing institutional commitments, and harnessing new technologies. The study advocates for a more deliberate and collaborative approach to sustainability in higher education institutions, ensuring that sustainability is not only taught but also practiced by the institutions in their operations and governance.
