Communism and Modernity

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes communism as a specific yet auto-destructive form of modernity.Arnason opposes reducing communism to “anti-” or “pseudo-modernity” as he indicatesthat it belongs to the constellation of multiple modernities. The author discusses themodernizing achievements and blockages of communist systems, their ideologicalfoundations, and global influence. Finally, the article demonstrates that communismconstituted a project of integrating knowledge, power, and the economy, but its internalcontradictions left the project in a state of permanent crisis. In this regard, the collapseof the USSR and transformations of communist states become a point of departure fora broader reflection on crises of modernity.
