Feministic Phenomenology and the Experience of Gender (Review of Marzena Adamiak’s Przeżywając płeć)

Summary/Abstract: The text introduces feminist phenomenology, which has so far received little attention inPolish scholarship. What fills this gap is Marzena Adamiak’s monograph Przeżywając płeć.Doświadczenie na styku feminizmu, poststrukturalizmu i fenomenologii (ExperiencingGender: Experience at Junction of Feminism, Poststructuralism, and Phenomenology).The article extensively reviews Przeżywając płeć, whose author offers a thoroughanalysis of the foundations that underlie the fusion of phenomenology and feminism inlight of post-structuralist critique. This erudite study of experiencing gender combinesphilosophical reflection with feminist practice. Adamiak asks about the experienceof femininity and demonstrates how much one can gain from attempting to answerthis question with feminist phenomenology. Moreover, the article indicates the issueof hysteria, almost absent in Adamiak’s publication, which may seem unsatisfactory.Nevertheless, the methodological groundwork carefully prepared by Adamiak offersinnovative insight into the experience of gender.
