“A Look Back After the Years:” Inspirations and Continuations of Zygmunt Bauman’s Theory of Culture from the Polish Period of His Work

Summary/Abstract: During the few years before his forced departure from Poland, Zygmunt Baumanfocused mainly on the theory of culture. Along with many articles, he wrote two bookson this subject; in fact, one of them, Sketches in the Theory of Culture, appeared onlyafter a quarter of a century. This article reflects on this now somewhat forgotten yetsignificant period of Bauman’s scientific work. The article analyzes his Marxist andstructuralist inspirations in shaping the foundations of the theory of culture, as well astheir continuations in his later work. The author indicates that these inspirations alsoreappear in Bauman’s latest work, which belongs to the “nostalgic turn.”
