Summary/Abstract: Following Italy’s entry into the First World War, the General Secretariat for Civil Affairs within the General Staff took action to protect and evacuate the most important artworks from the Veneto region. The Directorate-General for Antiquities and Fine Arts within the Ministry of Education provided several specialists who were reserve officers. With the support of the Carabinieri, artworks – particularly from the Veneto region, which was most exposed to attacks – were secured and prepared for evacuation. These operations were coordinated by the journalist Ugo Ojetti, a reserve lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers, who was enlisted as a volunteer.
