Summary/Abstract: This research analyses the life of Baqi b. Makhlad who began learning hadith at an early age and spent nearly half of his life traveling to Islamic lands in the East for this purpose, and his contribution to Andalusian Hadith culture. After completing his 34-year scholarly journeys and returning to his homeland, he intended to bring and transmit the narrations and Works, which he had acquired during these time, to Andalusia; however, Mâlikî scholars attempted to obstruct him. With the support of the caliph of the time, he overcame these challenges, established a hadith madrasa in Cordoba, and began to disseminate his scholarly knowledge. As a result of his intensive efforts, Baqi b. Makhlad pioneered the introduction of different narrations and works into Andalusia for the first time. Previously, Mâliki scholars had been dominant in the region, where the works other than Imam Mâlik’s (d. 179/795) Muwatta' had been never taught. He transformed Andalusia, where the sciences of hadith narration and comprehension were previously unknown, into a hadith center and made great efforts to spread the science of hadith there. This study examines the life of Baqi b. Makhlad and his contribution to the hadith culture of Andalusia. It is of great importance to highlight the unique efforts and contributions of Baqi b. Makhlad in his scholarly journeys undertaken in pursuit of knowledge and in transforming al-Andalus into a center of hadith studies. The aim is to introduce Baqī b. Makhlad within the context of his life, journeys, teachers, students, and works, and to reveal his place in the cultural and intellectual history of Andalusia. In order to ensure alignment with the scope of the study, the document analysis design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. Furthermore, based on the findings of the research, some recommendations were presented for a more detailed examination of Baqi b. Makhlad in particular and of Andalusian hadith culture in general.
