Summary/Abstract: The contribution focuses on a selective presentation of historical and developmental shifts between the subsystems of children's and young adult literature – adult literature, and non-fiction – fiction. These shifts are elucidated through a comparative interpretation of model arch-narratives (such as One Thousand and One Nights, Little Red Riding Hood, the epic Iliad, and Mesopotamian and Biblical flood stories). In this context, it also partially addresses certain theoretical issues that challenge the traditional definitions of these subsystems or indicate their complexity. At the same time, it hypothetically suggests possible correlations between the shifts in these two subsystem polarities (adult – children's, fictional – factual).
