Summary/Abstract: The report examines the nature and characteristics of the right to respect for private and family life in contemporary Europe. The study is based both on the provisions of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR), adopted by the Council of Europe in 1950, and on the steadily evolving case law of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in this area. It also touches on certain aspects of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). Regarding the right to respect for private and family life within the European Union (EU), particular attention is given to the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU (CFR).
