Summary/Abstract: A documentary collection has a multidimensional value, capturing both a literary personality and the Romanian literary society from a specific period of time. In the context of a “paradigm of cultural heritage”, the present approach delves into the concept of archives, referencing the dual nature of their meaning: as objective records and as repositories of subjective interpretations, which vary based on context and intertextuality. The case of Adrian Marino’s archive is thus scrutinized, showing how annotations in his personal library interact with his critical works, illustrating the second layer of meaning – interpretation through intertextuality. Additionally, the role played by genetic criticism is discussed, focusing on the distinction between “writing” (the creative process) and the final “written” text, emphasizing how unfinished manuscripts represent a tangible, unique reality that can be studied independently of the final published work. We thus aim to reveal a segment of the network and affiliations within the academic sphere over the second half of the 20th century. Adrian Marino’s family archive and personal belongings are complemented by the documentary collection held by the Lucian Blaga Central University Library of Cluj-Napoca, namely the Adrian Marino Collection, kept in the reading room that also bears his name. The archive documents Marino's intellectual and cultural life, including his challenging post-prison reintegration in 1964. It contains invaluable materials like foreign and Romanian correspondence with key figures like Emil Cioran, Matei Călinescu or Mircea Eliade, as well as drafts and notes for his unfinished works, reflecting his determination to preserve culture during the communist regime. The archive further includes drafts, manuscripts, and extensive notes for Adrian Marino's works, notably his unfinished Dictionary of Literary Ideas, which alone consists of 70 files of reading notes. The collection also contains reviews, critical studies, interviews, and interventions related to his work. One key aspect of the archive is Marino’s personal library, which reflects his deep engagement with literary theory, criticism, hermeneutics, and aesthetics. The collection of books that belonged to the critic and literary historian, which bear the markings and handwritten notes that can, in fact, subsequently be found referenced in his critical works, represents one facet of the possible historical and literary reconstruction. Reconfiguring an era involves tapping into Adrian Marino’s personal, family archive: the family documents and the collection of letters reflect the critic’s engagement with the society of his time (through the exchange of ideas with other notable 20th-century figures), and even the critic’s testament underscores the importance of keeping the archive and book collection intact. In his will, Adrian Marino himself states that the objective is to “illustrate the totality of his work, the approach and the working techniques employed by a Romanian critic from this period”.
