Summary/Abstract: John Chrysostom is cited in five of the 66 homilies included in Tâlcul evangheliilor (“The Meaning of the Gospels”), Coresi’s first Postil, published in 1567. His quotations range from extensive excerpts (as in Homily 14) to brief mentions without precise references (e.g., Homilies 21, 44). A notable instance is the 50th homily, where Chrysostom is cited as the source of four brief teachings based on the biblical passage describing Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem (John 12:1-18). The presence of these and other patristic references in Coresi’s first homiliary has puzzled scholars, who mistakenly believed that this first Romanian book of sermons was the result of a negotiation between Reformed magistrates (attempting to impose the Reformation on the Wallachian Orthodox community) and Orthodox clergymen collaborating with Coresi in translating and printing “The Meaning of the Gospels”. This paper demonstrates that the four ideas attributed to Chrysostom in the second part of Homily 50 are adaptations of observations extracted by Wolfgang Musculus from Chrysostom’s Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew. Although Musculus was aware of the so-called Opus Imperfectum, which he references in his commentary, he primarily engages with Chrysostom’s genuine homilies. Our findings suggest that we should reconsider the older views (proposed by P.P. Panaitescu, among others) that Coresi’s First Postil resulted from an Orthodox-Protestant negotiation.
