Summary/Abstract: This paper presents a review of contemporary scientific research and perspectives on empathy as a psychological phenomenon. It outlines its core essence and delineates its two main components — emotional and cognitive. In addition to the empathic response itself, the paper explores and distinguishes several related emotional phenomena, such as emotional contagion, personal distress, and sympathy. Their impact on everyday behavior is also examined, particularly in relation to the inclination to engage in prosocial and helping behavior. The paper further discusses cases of empathy deficits and how empathic capacities can be exploited by individuals with narcissistic or psychopathic traits. Finally, attention is drawn to the fact that empathic understanding can remain superficial and inaccurate, or, conversely, be consciously cultivated into a deeper, more integrated, and supportive form
