The Digital Euro and Monetary Policy Instruments

Summary/Abstract: In recent years, the European Central Bank has been actively developing a project to create central bank digital currency (CBDC). The work to date has clarified the conceptual framework of euro CBDCs and their main product features. The European Commission’s proposed legislative package for the digital euro is largely in line with the results of the experimental work of the national central banks of Eurosystem and the investigation phase of the digital euro project. The progress of the project allows for the outline of the possibilities for using individual parameters of digital euro as part of the monetary policy toolbox in the euro area. These issues will be the subject of analysis in this report
