Summary/Abstract: The primary aim of this study is to analyze selected source material attesting to the defection of soldiers from the army of the Latin Empire to the camp of its Balkan adversaries between 1210 and 1238. Particular attention is devoted to information preserved in sources contemporary with the events, among them letters from the correspondence of the Roman popes Innocent III (1198–1216) and Gregory IX (1227–1241), letters of the Latin Emperor Henry of Hainaut (1206–1216), the Rhymed Chronicle of Philippe Mouskes (c. 1220–1282), and others. Employing modern methodological approaches, the author offers a reconstruction of both the course of events and the underlying factors that led to the Latin soldiers’ defections to the service of local rulers.
