Reineccius on the Bessi: A Translation with Commentary

Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the first Bulgarian translation of the text of Reineccius (1541 – 1595), dedicated to the Thracian tribe of the Bessi. It includes an analysis and commentary on the information compiled by this author. The paper highlights that the text relies entirely on correctly cited ancient and medieval sources. Structurally, the account of the Bessi begins with a kind of ethnographic introduction, followed by a discussion of aspects of their military-political history, and the conclusion emphasizes the special honor they received once they came under Roman rule. It is stressed that familiarity with the work of Reineccius leads to the rediscovery of forgotten sources, the identification of different interpretative traditions for existing sources, and the development of new arguments
