Summary/Abstract: The terminological apparatus of art theory and criticism is a powerful ideological tool for legitimising and marginalising art. The concepts of the art-historical language shape a hierarchy that positions some artistic practices at the centre while pushing others to the periphery, delineating the invisible boundaries of the acceptable. The 1961 Young Artists Exhibition is an important example of how artists could, in a “controlled” way, put the established order to the test. The language of art criticism actively shapes the trajectory of Bulgarian art and the public’s tastes.
