Summary/Abstract: Through a comparative analysis of the compositions and aesthetic styles of the renowned art song composer Schubert, often dubbed the „King of Art Songs,“ and the pioneering Chinese art song composer Qing Zhu, this study delves into the transitional phase of Chinese art songs. It explores the adjustments and transformations experienced by art songs during the shift from traditional Chinese music to Chinese ethnic music. This period marked the gradual establishment of a harmonious relationship between harmonic modes and the traditional Chinese pentatonic scale, as well as between the Chinese language, and classical Chinese poetry. This evolution ultimately gave rise to a distinctive style of art songs with a strong ethnic flavor.
