Summary/Abstract: Characteristics of stress: The publication is devoted to the issue of stress as a significant psycho-physiological phenomenon that affects human body‘s adaptation to the external environment and is an important factor in the development of many psycho-somatic diseases. Regulatory mechanisms - endocrine system - autonomic nervous system - general adaptation syndrome: They influence the effects of stressors on the body, which explains the difference between eustress and distress and the importance of the general adaptation syndrome and its phases. Objectification of a stress-related situation by examining heart rate variability: It points out the possibility of objectifying a stress-related situation through examination of heart rate variability using computer evaluation by a so-called spectral analysis. This non-invasive functional method allows assessing the state of autonomic regulation of cardiac activity in various conditions at rest, during stress load, as well as in patients with serious diseases (myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathy, condition after heart transplantation, with developed autonomic cardiac neuropathy, etc.) Does age affect the plasticity of the autonomic nervous system? Specific case reports in pathological conditions, stress-related situations, and the plasticity of the autonomic nervous system in individual age groups are presented. The above examinations are supplemented by imaging of the state of adrenergic innervation of the myocardium using radionuclide examinations. Summary: Pointing out the clinical significance of these diagnostic methodologies, the management of stress-related situations with an emphasis on the stability of the autonomic nervous system´s balance, and the prevention of civilization diseases.
