Summary/Abstract: The article examines the Christmas song “Radujme se, veselme se [Let us rejoice and be merry]” by the Baroque Franciscan priest, preacher, composer, and poet Juraj Paulín Bajan (1721 – 1792). The song, which is interesting from various perspectives, is interpreted in the context of literary-historical views and more recent historical and musicological findings. On the one hand, there is the older theory of the so-called secularisation of the transcendent in Baroque literature; on the other hand, the song also offers a reverse interpretative perspective of the sacralisation of ordinary secular life. This is reflected in the willingness of man (the poem’s lyrical subject) to sacrifice to God everyday trifles – that is, very imperfect gifts at first, but gradually entire livesThe study further explores how the Baroque performative effect – aimed at affect and at the collective or individual experience thereof – operates within this authorial approach, whether in the perceiver of such poetry or in the poetic subject. It also touches on questions of genre, the verifiability of Bajan’s authorship, and the relationship between Baroque poetry and Baroque kitsch in his work.
