Summary/Abstract: The article brings forth an interpretation of the scholarly legacy of literary historian Gizela Gáfriková (1945 – 2014) in light of current research into literary intentionality in older Slovak literature. It assumes that Gáfriková’s literary-historical realism, combining textological precision, source heuristics, and contextual analysis, heralds a methodological shift towards a pragmatically oriented interpretation of literary text. The analysis shows that her interpretations of older Slovak literature – especially of spiritual and didactic poetry and the earliest literary historiography – aim to reconstruct the intentional layers of the text, in which the author’s intention, genre conventions, and communicative functions merge within the literary practice and communal life of the time. From this perspective, Gáfriková’s work appears as a combination of philological work with the text and interpretation of its functional content – as a basis for current approaches to the reconstruction of the pragmatic and communicative dimensions of older Slovak literature in the full breadth of relevant linguistic and historical contexts.
