Summary/Abstract: Péter Demény’s writing is a personal and theatre-historical evaluation of the Prospero book series, which ran for more than two decades and featured interviews with actors, directors, and other theatre professionals. The author tells the background story to the birth of the series, speaks about his initial enthusiasm, and the editorial, professional, and personal challenges that accompanied the project from its inception. The aim of the volumes was to paint a portrait of the artists, their lives and careers through reader-friendly, casual conversations, while setting the artistic oeuvres in context with rich photographic material, a selection of theatre reviews and short essays. Thus, the article not only documents the history of an outstanding series of theatre interviews, but also provides insight into the editorial dilemmas that arise at the intersection of theatre history and oral history.
