Summary/Abstract: Whatever the aims and objectives pursued, wars created, above all, suffering and pain. The fate of prisoners of war was never an enviable one, as they were always at the disposal of their captors, who could dispose of their possessions and even their lives as they saw fit. The memoirs written by those who survived and returned to their country are a particularly valuable source of information about the often inhuman conditions in which Romanians who had fallen captive had to live out their lives as prisoners. The article presents the memoirs of two officers of The 33rd Regiment of the Tulcea Dorobanți, prisoners in Germany during the First World War. They describe the way they were taken prisoner, their journey to the German camps, the conditions in all the camps they passed through and the horrors to which the population of Dobrogea was subjected by Bulgarian and Turkish soldiers during the occupation.
