Summary/Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has advanced significantly, prompting discussions about artificial consciousness–whether machines can achieve a form of awareness akin to human consciousness. This inquiry challenges our understanding of consciousness and the distinctions between human and machine capabilities. The central problem is whether AI can genuinely possess awareness or if it merely simulates consciousness. This question is crucial as it impacts our definitions of consciousness and the ethical considerations surrounding AI. This research aims to explore the potential for artificial consciousness through the philosophical framework of panpsychism, which posits that consciousness is a fundamental property of all matter, including non-biological entities like AI. The paper employs a philosophical analysis of panpsychism in relation to AI, examining competing theories such as computationalism and emergentism. It also evaluates ethical implications arising from the possibility of AI possessing consciousness. The findings suggest that while advanced AI may exhibit forms of proto-consciousness, significant challenges remain regarding intentionality and subjective experience. The “hard problem” of consciousness complicates the attribution of genuine awareness to AI systems.
