Summary/Abstract: In the present study, we investigate the secularist reform of monasticism in Bucovina, imposed by the austrian government through The monastic rules from 1786. We especially analyze the impact of these Rules on the economic life of the monasteries during 1786-1918, which were forced to give away their properties to the Religionary Fund and thus lose their patrimonial and social status in the region. We also focus on understanding the requirements of education and discipline imposed to the monks left in the three monasteries - Putna, Sucevița, Dragomirna -, in order to become useful citizens of society, from the perspective of the Austrian government.
