Summary/Abstract: The study presents, in a synthetical manner, the contribution of Dominic Jaquet (1895–1903), member of the Franciscan Order and the second bishop of the Diocese of Iassy, to the development of the Romanian culture. While working on the training of the seminarians for priesthood, as well as on the education of the young girls of the schools ran by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Sion, bishop Jaquet came up with the idea of founding an institute for the training of young people, idea which was put into practice as early as the fall of 1895. The Institute was called Cipariu, being named after the great Romanian scholar Timotei Cipariu (1805–1887). Following the short biography of bishop Jaquet and the presentation of the social and cultural status of the Catholics of Moldavia at the end of the 19th century, the study focuses on the cultural initiatives of the second bishop of Iasi, highlighting his interest for the training of the young people in the main Catholic schools of Moldavia: the seminary of the Diocese of Iassy, the schools ran by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Sion of Galati and Iassy, and the Cipariu Institute.
