Summary/Abstract: The article examines how gender discourse (including national images of masculinity) is used in Russian symbolic politics. Special attention is paid to the image-symbol of «muzhik», which gains the traits of hegemonic masculinity because it rather corresponds to the contemporary Russian identity. The authors consider the influence of the «muzhik» symbol on the image of national leader in Russia
