“I Was Not an Agent”: A Contribution to the Biography of the Head of the Sonderkommando in the Łódź Ghetto Based on the Trial Materials of the Honorary Court in Munich (1949) and on an Interview With Itzik Kuperstein (1974)

Summary/Abstract: The subject of the article is an analysis of the procedural documents of the Honorary Court in Munich and an interview conducted by David Gertler with Itzik Kuperstein. Gertler, during the war the head of the Sonderkommando in the Łódź ghetto, appeared before the Honorary Court in 1949, but was ultimately not tried. During the preparations for his trial, dozens of witness statements were collected, as well as statements by Gertler himself. In 1974, he agreed to give an interview to a doctoral student at the Max Weinreich Center for Advanced Jewish Studies. The interview, recorded on magnetic tapes, is Gertler’s extensive account of his life before, during, and after the war.
