Summary/Abstract: Since the beginning of the 21st century the share and popularity of private label foodstuffs on the market has risen consistently. The paper briefly discusses the idea and categories of private labels and the reasons and strategies for their being launched on the market. It also touches on their history and share in the retail trade. The author then goes on to present the most popular private labels available on the Polish market within this category of products. The main aim of the paper was to identify the determinants of consumer selection and consumption of private label foodstuffs. The correctness of labelling of the most popular selected food private label packages were also checked and compared with their brand equivalents. Respondents were generally positive to the private label products and the product category was shown to have considerable development prospects.
